Limited US strikes answered an Iranian drone hit on a Singapore-flagged boxship. Neither side reported casualties, and neither side claimed the nuclear file was in play. The exchange still shows how little margin the truce has left.

Washington answered an Iranian drone strike on commercial traffic in the Strait of Hormuz with a calibrated military reply, testing whether the Lake Lucerne ceasefire can absorb provocation without collapsing into a wider war. U.S. Central Command said its forces “conducted strikes against Iran, June 26, as a powerful response to yesterday’s attack on a commercial ship that was transiting the Strait of Hormuz,” naming Iranian “missile and drone storage facilities and radar sites” as the targets [E1].
Thursday’s incident centered on the Ever Lovely, a Singapore-flagged container vessel hit “7.5 nautical miles south-east of Oman’s port of Dahit.” Evergreen, the owner, said “All crew members remain safe as does the vessel itself and all cargo” [E3]. No casualties were reported on either side of the subsequent US action, and neither government framed the weekend’s violence as an opening move against nuclear infrastructure.
CENTCOM cast Iran’s move as a direct breach of the truce. “The unwarranted aggression against commercial shipping by Iranian forces clearly violated the ceasefire,” the command said [E2]. That framing matters: the US is not treating Hormuz as a separate lane where tankers and boxships sail outside diplomatic commitments signed at Lake Lucerne.
President Trump, posting on Truth Social, called the drone hit “Obviously … a foolish violation of our Ceasefire Agreement” [E4]. Vice President Vance sharpened the deterrence message on X, insisting “Iran signed a ceasefire agreement. We have honored it” and adding that disagreements over how the memorandum of understanding is applied should be handled by phone, not ordnance: “But violence will be met with violence” [E5].
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps pushed back through state-linked channels quoted by BBC, branding Washington “the treaty-breaking US regime” and warning that “If the aggression is repeated our response will be more extensive than this” [E6]. Tehran thus accepts the exchange as reciprocal while reserving room to escalate if US strikes continue.
Analysts reading the sequence see limited strikes by design. Storage sites and coastal radar fit a pattern of disabling launch and tracking capacity without touching the nuclear portfolio that dominated earlier phases of the crisis. On paper, the ceasefire still holds: both capitals reaffirm the agreement even as they accuse each other of breaking it.
Shipping markets will watch whether insurers and charterers treat Hormuz as a resumed war zone or a corridor where violence is episodic. Crew safety on the Ever Lovely suggests the Iranian hit was meant to signal reach and resolve, not to sink a hull. Yet each cycle of strike and counterstrike narrows the diplomatic space Vance described as a phone call away.
For now the Lake Lucerne framework survives its first major stress test in the Gulf: limited blows, loud rhetoric, no body count. Whether that equilibrium lasts depends on whether “more extensive” IRGC language stays rhetorical or becomes the next night’s operational plan [E6].
