Saudi authorities said Houthi attacks hit energy facilities, injured 73 people and forced operations to halt. Reuters also reported a higher Brent print and a wider shipping-risk backdrop, but not the exact Jazan damage attribution.

CENTCOM says the strait remains open under military support while its Iran-port blockade redirects and disables vessels. Houthi attacks have added pressure at the Red Sea’s southern gate.

The global benchmark reached a six-week high as Red Sea diversions widened the route risk, then fell below the mark. A two-million-barrel US inventory build supplied the counterweight.

President Trump declared the interim Iran accord over on 8 July, and Brent jumped nearly 5% to about $78 while WTI reached $73.50. Days after the front Brent curve had slipped into contango, the same chokepoint threat re-priced the barrel in a single session. Cross-asset markets read the shock as inflationary: the dollar and yields rose while gold fell.

Commercial fire returned to the strait on Monday night, nineteen days after Iran pledged toll-free safe passage in Islamabad. A Qatari LNG carrier and a Saudi crude tanker took damage within hours as Washington warned retaliation is likely and Brent crude ticked higher.

Brent and WTI settled near pre-war levels on 3 July as the forward curve flipped into contango for the first time this year. Tanker passages through Hormuz have recovered and Gulf export flows are rebuilding, though diplomatic channels remain paused and inspectors have not returned to struck Iranian facilities.

Washington and Tehran agreed to stand down, and Brent traded around $72–$73 a barrel on 29 June, a modest lift inside a sharply lower week. The barrel has given back most of the early-June spike above $90; the tape is betting on resumed Hormuz flows faster than underwriters and AIS data confirm.

Crude touched its lowest level since before the war as tankers trickled back through Hormuz, then a tanker strike, Bahrain drone hits, and a second wave of US airstrikes landed with exchanges closed. The forward price may gap up Monday; the chokepoint's real tariff is already set by war-risk premiums and ships running dark.

The strait has moved from feared tollbooth to managed reopening, and crude has priced the shift before the old traffic pattern is fully back.

Traffic is returning through the strait, and oil is pricing the reopening. Passage, however, is being rebuilt as an administered privilege: permits first, one route, Iranian-approved insurance now free, and fees planned later.

The Strait has shifted from freeze to test passage. Brent is pricing the Lucerne process and returning barrels, while the real stress has moved into freight, insurance, discounts, and the unproven mechanics of Iran’s permit regime.

Brent is holding near $80.6 because the market is pricing barrels that can still move through dark, state-linked and sanctions-tolerant channels. The stress test is not whether crude keeps slipping through, but whether insured, visible, ordinary tonnage returns.

Three institutions are now describing three different Hormuz realities: a military count, a commercial count and a tracker count. The physical market is voting more slowly than oil, and the missing VLCCs are the vote.

Oil is pricing the truce as a reopening. Shipping is treating Hormuz as a mined corridor governed by permits, Iranian routing, sanctions risk and insurance that remains abnormal.

Russian strikes on Odesa-region ports threaten to turn Ukraine’s export corridor into a lower-capacity, higher-cost system. The under-reported pressure is fiscal: port repair and winter power-grid repair now draw on the same scarce wartime resources.

Brent’s fall toward $78 is not only the removal of a war premium. It is also the first repricing of stranded Gulf barrels entering a market where refiners are already covered, Chinese demand is patchy, and the toll question has only been postponed.

Brent has fallen below the war-premium line, but the Strait of Hormuz is moving only a fraction of its normal traffic. The market has priced the political reopening faster than ships, insurers and mine-clearance teams can make the route commercially ordinary again.

The claimed US-Iran MOU has lowered the political temperature, but commercial shipping is still behaving as if the strait remains impaired. The working market is a controlled, dark-transfer bridge, not a normal reopening.

The paper trade is repricing peace faster than tankers are moving. The remaining question is whether the last dollars of premium unwind into sub-$80 Brent or harden into a permanent Hormuz toll.

Brent has fallen 30.9% from its April war peak as deal headlines land and open interest flees. The physical strait is not back: visible tanker traffic is near three a day, many ships are dark, and the IRGC still has a tollbooth-shaped shadow.

Brent traded the peace deal and sold off. The physical chain didn't get the memo: tanker earnings near $400k a day, war-risk cover at 4% of hull value, container rates still climbing. Paper oil believes the signature; the sea does not.
