The Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected the launches from the Pyongyang area at about 9:20 a.m. and that at least one of the missiles flew more than 900 kilometers. [E4][E5]
Japan's Defense Ministry said it had detected two separate launches. [E6]
The first missile, fired at around 9:19 a.m., traveled about 220 km and reached a maximum altitude of 20 km, the ministry said. [E7]
The second, launched around 9:36 a.m., flew more than 910 km, at a maximum altitude of 70 km. [E8]
Both splashed down in the Sea of Japan, outside Japan's exclusive economic zone. [E9]
Monday's launch marked North Korea's 16th round of ballistic missile launches this year, following its previous launch on Oct. 3. [E10] Monday's Pyongyang-area rounds are a later event than this paper's August East Sea salvo during Ulchi Freedom Shield and September's Wonsan launches.
