National Defence said members of 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group’s 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, were conducting live-fire training at CFB Wainwright at about 1600 MDT on Oct. 17 as part of Exercise APOLLO SHOOTER. [E1]
CBC reported that a grass fire during the training injured 39 people, including 19 in critical condition. [E2]
CBC identified the four soldiers killed as Sgt. Morgan Wong, Pte. Shaun Farrell, Pte. Aidan Goulding and Pte. Hayden Lykkemark. [E3]
Maj.-Gen. Wade Rutland, commander of 1st Canadian Division, said the fire began on a training range and that uncommonly strong winds made it spread rapidly and change direction toward soldiers taking part in exercises. [E4]
The cause of the initial fire remains under investigation. [E5]
The desk's reading. The record fixes the exercise and the wind but not why soldiers were exposed when the fire shifted. The strongest competing reading is that exceptional wind alone determined the outcome. Rutland’s account makes that plausible, but the open investigation means the available facts cannot yet settle the ignition or the conditions that preceded the fire’s movement.
The next test. The present evidence offers no observable discriminator yet.
