China's customs agency said Wednesday that exports surged 36.3% in September from a year earlier. [E4] Reuters reported the customs figures as dollar-denominated. [E1][E2][E3] Trading Economics and South China Morning Post put last month's outbound shipments at $447.18 billion. [E8][E10] On 8 September the paper last treated China's export ledger; this is the next monthly customs print.
South China Morning Post said the print exceeded a 25.7% forecast from economists polled by Wind; Trading Economics put the estimates at 25.5%; the Associated Press said the data were better than economists had expected. [E11][E8][E4]
Export growth accelerated from 25% in August, the Associated Press said, with high-tech goods such as semiconductors and autos helping fuel the shipments. [E4] Trading Economics said the print marked the strongest growth in seven months, as the global AI infrastructure boom continued to sustain demand for Chinese high-tech products. [E8]
Trading Economics and South China Morning Post put September's surplus at $133.53 billion. [E7][E12] Trading Economics said that was up from $88.72 billion a year earlier, above a $118.1 billion forecast, and the largest surplus since January 2025. [E7] The Associated Press said the surplus widened from $119.1 billion in August. [E5]
September imports rose 31.0% year over year to a record $313.66 billion, Trading Economics said, with shipments to the United States surging 39.56% year over year and the surplus with the United States rising to $34.01 billion. [E9] South China Morning Post reported a different total for the same month's imports. [E12] Trading Economics said the print beat a 24.5% forecast; Wind's projection was 23.79%. [E9][E12] Pressure from the United States and the European Union for China to address industrial overcapacity and the surplus has yet to materially dent Beijing's overall export performance, Trading Economics said. [E9]
FactSet data showed September's export-growth pace was the fastest since February, the Associated Press said, with import growth also accelerating from August's 28.2% rise. [E5]
Between January and September, China's semiconductor exports soared 108.1% year on year in value, the Associated Press reported, citing customs data. Exports of automatic data processing equipment and parts jumped 54.6%, while auto exports rose 54.3%, driven by increased global demand for Chinese electric vehicles and hybrids. [E6]
For the first nine months, China's trade surplus reached $938 billion, the Associated Press said, with expectations growing that it could surpass last year's full-year $1.2 trillion record as pressure ramped up from trading partners, including the European Union, to rebalance trade.
