GRIDCo said that at about 04:30 on Thursday 20 August a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line caused automatic tripping of Akosombo units and some thermal plants, and a loss of supply in parts of the country [E1]. Engineers isolated the line and began systematic restoration [E1]. Full supply to affected areas was restored by 12:03 the same day [E2]. A Friday 21 August GRIDCo note confirmed the mobilisation and thanked the public [E2]. No credible primary describes a second fault on Friday [E1][E2].

Thursday was the second major disturbance in under three weeks, after 29 July [E1]. The mechanism underneath is older. A 23 April fire wrecked the Akosombo switchyard control room. GRIDCo chose a temporary bypass rather than a six-month shutdown [E2][E3]. Jinapor, at a 20 August PURC event, said that under the temporary measure a frequency disturbance takes Akosombo off immediately to protect the system, and that a permanent control centre was expected next month [E2].

Ministry communications put a temporary switchyard and control facility at the end of September, with a lasting building 18 to 24 months out [E3]. That is a construction calendar, not a completed room [E3]. The 20 August line fault, on GRIDCo’s own telling, is what the protection system did; the minister’s gloss is why Akosombo comes off so fast when frequency moves [E1][E2].

Justice Ohene-Akoto of the Africa Sustainable Energy Centre, on TV3 on 21 August, said investment would not save the system without a technical cleanup and that GRIDCo was not telling the public something [E4]. He wants a root-cause paper, not only a restoration statement [E4][E5]. ASEC posted a 21 August call for a comprehensive report covering initiating events, cascades and lessons [E5]. GRIDCo had not published that analysis by the freeze [E1][E4].

The 21 August public record is therefore commentary and a restoration confirmation, not a new blackout [E2][E4]. The load-bearing claim is that Akosombo is still running through a temporary room four months after the fire, and that a line fault on Thursday showed how that room trips [E1][E2][E3].

Whether the September temporary facility actually enters service, and whether GRIDCo posts a root-cause note on the 20 August and 29 July events, are later clocks [E3][E5]. Friday’s facts are the restoration statement and the minister’s description of the bypass [E2][E3].
