Pyongyang Fires a Dozen During UFS

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff first reported an unidentified projectile toward the East Sea on Thursday afternoon [E1]. By the 19:26 KST recast the same desk was describing a barrage: roughly a dozen short-range ballistic missiles from the Pyongyang area around 17:00 KST [E2]. The Korea Herald, citing the JCS, rendered the count as more than ten [E3]. Japan’s defence ministry timed the launch at about 17:04 and called it multiple ballistic missiles [E5].

Range is a JCS number. The missiles flew about 300 km toward the East Sea [E4]. Japan’s ministry estimated about 320 km of flight, a peak altitude near 90 km, and a splash near the Korean east coast outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone [E5][E6]. No damage to aircraft or vessels was reported [E6]. Type was not in the JCS recast. A later ministerial guess of 600 mm multiple rocket launchers associated with KN-25 is an assessment, not a JCS identification [E2][E3].

Ulchi Freedom Shield was still under way when the salvo flew [E2]. Seoul and Washington had already cut the exercise to Friday, 21 August, after a US request documented on 19 August [E2]. The presidential national security office treated the launches as happening while that shortened drill was current, and it called them a UN Security Council violation [E2]. A six-day trim of field training does not pause a North Korean test calendar [E2].

Kim Yo-jong used the cut as the insult. In a Thursday statement carried by Yonhap she said Trump’s sudden order to reduce the drill had placed Seoul in a poor plight of cancelling war games it liked very much [E7]. She called the reduction the first trouble of its kind in the history of the joint exercises and said US security aids were no longer free of charge [E7]. Those are her words about the 19 August calendar, published after Thursday’s missiles [E2][E7].

This is the third North Korean ballistic test of August, after launches from the Wonsan area on 6 and 12 August [E6]. The first JCS bulletin still said projectile, singular, which is why later recasts have to be read as updates, not as a second event [E1][E2]. Combined surveillance with the United States was described as continuing [E2].

What remains unmeasured is the exact type, the precise splash coordinates, and whether the low apogee is a labelled depressed trajectory [E2][E5]. Japan’s 90 km height for a 320 km shot is consistent with a depressed path and is not labelled as one in the ministry text [E5]. Friday is still the published UFS end. Thursday’s salvo is the new artifact on that clock [E2].
