xAI launched an early beta called Grok Bot on 11 August [E1][E3]. Each bot receives a persistent computer in the cloud and can continue working after the user logs out or turns off the device, according to the company [E1][E2]. That changes the unit being sold. The user is no longer renting only a conversation; the subscription now includes a place for work to keep running.
Access begins narrowly. xAI lists SuperGrok Heavy, Cursor Ultra and Cursor Teams Premium subscribers, with desktop and iOS support and an enterprise waitlist [E1][E2]. Elon Musk said the beta would widen after the team fixed basic issues and released Grok 4.6 later in the week [E4]. The launch therefore contains its own warning label: persistence is live, broad reliability is not yet claimed.
The mechanism is a remote workstation tied to the agent. xAI says bots can sign into authorized tools, applications and websites, including services that lack a clean API or Model Context Protocol connection [E1][E2]. Jobs can span several steps and return to the user for approval. Existing web interfaces become the integration layer when software vendors have not built one.
Multiple bots can run in parallel, message one another and share context, while saved routines preserve workflows demonstrated by the user [E1][E2]. Those features move orchestration from a developer framework into a subscription product. They also move the failure surface: credentials, browser state, approval boundaries and remembered routines now live beside the agent’s plan. A persistent worker inherits persistent secrets.
The product pages do not establish unrestricted control of a local computer, universal application support or reliable completion of long jobs [E1][E2]. Promotional lists circulating on launch day describe possible tasks rather than independently observed outcomes. An agent with a cloud desktop can still misunderstand a form, lose a session or wait forever on a human checkpoint. Infrastructure removes the sleeping laptop; it does not remove the brittle workflow.
The non-promotional advance is architectural. Local agents and connector-based assistants often depend on the user’s machine, a session window or an API-shaped path. Grok Bot claims a durable execution surface that can use the interface already presented to a person [E1][E2]. If it works, vendors no longer have to expose every action before an agent can attempt it. If it fails, the agent becomes an expensive remote browser with excellent stamina.
xAI’s next evidence must come from operation rather than the launch page. The useful tests are multi-day jobs, expired sessions, approval recovery, credential revocation and several bots competing for the same account state. Musk’s promise to widen access after basic fixes makes the release sequence inspectable [E4]. The agent has been given a computer; the beta now has to prove it can finish a shift.
