The earthquake reached Kumamoto at 16:27 on Tuesday afternoon. Japan’s meteorological agency measured magnitude 7.1 at a provisional depth of sixteen kilometres and maximum seismic intensity 7 in Uki and Hikawa. [E1] A tsunami advisory for the Ariake and Yatsushiro seas was lifted at 18:10 without a significant wave.

Rescue work remained open after the first infrastructure checks. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency’s 23:00 report had not confirmed a death in its official tally, but listed operations at collapsed buildings and industrial sites in Hikawa, Kumamoto, Yatsushiro and Uto. Electricity and transport supplied the wider operating loss. Kyushu’s distribution company recorded a peak of 48,530 households without power and still counted 47,210 disconnected in Kumamoto Prefecture at 20:00. Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing evacuated its workforce at Kikuyo, where shaking reached upper 5. The TSMC-controlled fab accounted for its personnel, completed a structural inspection and began gradually restoring operations. [E5] Construction work on the second fab paused as a precaution. The company had not published wafer loss, tool damage or utilisation data at the research bell.

That missing production line is the supply-chain question. Structural clearance returns people to the building. Lithography, deposition and metrology tools still require calibration, gas and chemical systems require checks, and wafers interrupted mid-process may not return with the lights. A gradual restart describes the sequence; it does not quantify the output.

The counter-case is Japanese industrial preparation. JASM’s evacuation, accounting and inspection procedure moved from shaking to a declared structural restart within hours. Nuclear regulators also reported no safety abnormality at Sendai, Genkai or Ikata. [E6] If tool checks clear quickly, the global semiconductor effect will be smaller than the local emergency.

Aftershocks own the next shift. JMA counted dozens of felt events in the first hours and warned that strongly shaken areas could experience another event of similar scale during the following week.
