On Friday, Jimmy Donaldson — MrBeast — passed 500 million YouTube subscribers. His post was four words and a wall of hearts: "WE HIT HALF A BILLION SUBSCRIBERS." [E2] YouTube made it official, calling him "the first individual creator to reach 500 million YouTube subscribers." [E1] He's now the biggest channel on the platform, past the music label T-Series and its 312 million.

Put that number somewhere real. Half a billion subscribers is about a fifth of everyone online — more people than live in any country except India and China. One man built that audience with no broadcast licence, no newsroom, and no government behind him. A century ago you'd have needed a state to reach that many people. Now you need a channel.

And it's not a coincidence that it landed this week. A rocket company became a $2 trillion business, a payments network gave chatbots a credit card, and a 27-year-old crossed half a billion subscribers — three versions of the same question: who piled up the scale, and what do they owe for it? A subscriber count isn't a soft story. It's the attention economy minting its own sovereign.
